This is a question I get a lot. Tarot is pretty popular and so most people understand what it is, even if they have never had a reading. Tarot is used in movies, books, and social media - I even attended a comedy night with a tarot reader! Charm divination is not as well known. It had its hay day on TikTok a few years ago and gained popularity there but beyond that, I don't see it around much.

"How does charm divination differ from tarot readings?"

The short answer is that both are wonderful tools for self-reflection, intuition, and personal growth, but they work in very different ways.

Neither method is better than the other. Instead, they offer different experiences and invite you to explore guidance through different symbolic languages.

How Tarot Readings Work

Tarot uses a structured deck of 78 cards, each with traditional imagery and established meanings that have developed over centuries.

During a tarot reading, cards are drawn in a particular spread, and their meanings are interpreted based on:

• The individual cards
• Their position in the spread
• The relationships between the cards
• The question or intention being explored

Many tarot readers also incorporate intuition, allowing each reading to become deeply personal while still grounded in the symbolism of the deck.

How Charm Divination Works

Charm divination takes a different approach.

Instead of drawing cards, a collection of symbolic charms is used for readings or pulls. Some of the ways I have seen them used include:

• Grabbing a handful and placing them in a tray
• Pulling a random charm, similar to how you might use an angel card deck

As my relationship has grown with my own charm divination practice, my style has changed. It really is best to try a few styles and choose what works best for you. If you're just getting started though, the mat and 1 charm pull are easiest to interpret.

The reading comes from the collection of charms that are included....not only from each individual charm, but also from:

• The direction they're facing
• The overall pattern that emerges
